Promoter Eddie Hearn has suggested that Dereck Chisora, former British and Commonwealth champion, still has enough left in the tank to beat America’s Deontay Wilder.
The Daily Mail has quoted Hearn stating:
“All Chisora’s losses have come at elite level, and Wilder is elite level,’ he said. ‘Listen, Chisora can beat Wilder. If he hits him with a big shot. I tell you what, if that fight goes past four rounds, Chisora wins that fight.”
But here is the thing…not all of Chisora’s losses have come at elite level! The Londoner has lost to Agit Kabayel, which was a challenge for the European crown. Kubrat Pulev also overcame him for the same title. And even though Pulev has challenged for the world title more than once it is doubtful that anybody would suggest that the Bulgarian was, or is an elite level heavyweight boxer.
With now suffering three straight defeats, it is likely now the end of the road for Chisora. I would argue that, even though he did have a good 2019, his decline has been noticeable since the Kabayel loss in Monaco.
You could argue that Wilder may now be damaged goods after losing to Tyson Fury twice. But that still remains to be seen. Oleksandr Usyk, Fury and even maybe Anthony Joshua aside, Wilder has the power to likely still put away every other contender. Wilder established that he also has plenty of heart to go with his strength in the Fury fights. Chisora also possesses a lot of bravery. But he is not a concussive puncher and never has been. Volume of punches is key to get a knockout for him.
Another issue I have with Hearn’s statement is that he thinks Dereck can win if such a contest manages to go further than four rounds. But Wilder has demonstrated more than once that he has late knockout power. Luis Ortiz, Johann Duhaupas and Eric Molina were all stopped considerably past the half way point. And Chisora has been knocked out by Dillian Whyte late.
It would be a mistake for Matchroom to organise a fight like this. It would be akin to sending Chisora to the gallows to be executed when he should be leaving the ring behind right now. He has had a career to be proud of and there is no shame in losing to mainly the very best.
