Both of these middleweight champions are on short winning streaks since suffering a recent loss, with Golovkin losing his rematch against Canelo Alvarez back in September 2018, and Murata losing a decision against Rob Brant a month after that. In the last 3+ years, Golovkin has only fought 3 times, and this was a guy who not too long ago was regularly fighting 3 times a year. But then on the other side, Murata has only fought twice in the last 3 years, and he will not have had a fight in almost 2 and a half years.
Golovkin will have just turned 40 the day before the fight. So Triple G is no spring chicken. But despite his age, Golovkin remains an elite middleweight. Triple G is a very smart fighter, he’s a highly skilled boxer with an excellent jab, strong punching power, a solid chin, and he has incredible fighting instinct. Murata is 36 years old, so he’s no spring chicken, either. Murata officially has two career losses, and he avenged both of those, the first of which was extremely controversial. And the only blemishes on Golovkin’s ledger are his draw in his first bout with Canelo, and his loss in their rematch, each of which had an aura of controversy as well.
This could wind up being a terrific fight with where these guys are at this stage in their respective careers. Golovkin will be highly motivated as a potential 3rd fight against Canelo hangs in the balance, and Murata will likewise be highly motivated as he will be facing the man who has been at or very near the top of the middleweight division for a great number of years. So no doubt both champions will come into this one as determined as ever, with very high stakes, and the two of them reaching an age where skills might deteriorate in rapid fashion. All of this makes for a very intriguing matchup between these two middleweight titlists.
