Coming up on May 7th from the T-mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a championship contest that will be televised on the US debut PPV event for the streaming app service DAZN, Canelo Alvarez is jumping back up to 175 to challenge the undefeated WBA super light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.
This fight is taking place less than a month after Gennady Golovkin stopped Ryota Murata in round 9 of their middleweight unification showdown, where there is an expectation that, given a Canelo victory against Bivol, Canelo would then move on to have a highly anticipated 3rd encounter against Triple G. But these plans might be premature, because Bivol is a very talented champion.
After being promoted from interim champion up to regular champion, Bivol was ultimately promoted and recognized as the WBA super champion in October 2019 prior to facing Lenin Castillo. Bivol has a perfect 19-0 record, and he fought twice last year. In May he won a 12 round unanimous decision against Craig Spider Richards, and then last December he beat Umar Salamov, also by 12 round unanimous decision.
Canelo is on an 8 fight winning streak, which began with his rematch victory against Golovkin. During that winning streak, he won a unification bout at middleweight against Daniel Jacobs, he won a major title at light heavyweight against Sergey Kovalev, and in a span of just 11 months, he beat 3 undefeated champions at 168 to become the first undisputed super middleweight world champion in the history of the weight class. Canelo is also just 1 of 6 boxers to ever become an undisputed boxing champion in any weight class during the modern 4 belt era.
So who will win the upcoming light heavyweight championship contest between Dmitry Bivol and Canelo Alvarez?
This edition of Rummy’s Corner will attempt to answer that question while providing a quick preview for the upcoming light heavyweight championship showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol. Please watch and enjoy the video for one man’s opinion on the match-up.
