Ryan Cotterell will be going hell for leather to make an instant impact in the pro ranks.
That introduction will come as part of BCB Promotions’ show in Wolverhampton, at the Hangar Events Venue (Pearson Street), on the Friday night of February 18.
His debut comes after a successful amateur career, winning two national titles and being selected for the Team England Elite Squad.
He went all of the way at the 2016 England Development Championships and the 2018 National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs competition.
All of his amateur experience, of 21 bouts with 17 victories, came under the tutelage of Richie Carter, who will take him into the pro code.
The two, in a fashion, started out together, with Cotterell a youngster in the gym when ex-pro Carter took up coaching for the first time, 10 years ago.
That journey took them to Wolverhampton Boxing Club, which is still their training base along with the rest of Carter’s pro stable.
At a stocky 6ft 2in, Cotterell will initially box at cruiserweight, but plans to campaign at light heavy in the long-term, where he’s again targeting titles.
The 21-year-old, from Essington, has waited over two years to lace up the gloves again and is planning to cause damage after the first bell rings.
He said: “I’m in a physical job, as a groundworker, and I’m still training twice a day, so I’m feeling very fit and stronger than ever. It’s all graft and that benefits me.
“I’m hitting hard, so my man strength is coming through and I’ve been boxing since I was 12. I’ve always been with Richie, I was at his first training session when he started coaching!
“I’ve got someone in Richie that knows everything about me and how I’ve developed since I was a kid. He’s the perfect choice to look after my career, as a pro.
“My last amateur bout was in 2019, I lost that one (to Jordan Wizzart) in the Development Championships and I was waiting for the England Elites (2020) to come up after that.
“With the pandemic, the tournament got cancelled and I’ve been waiting until now to turn pro. Now that it’s happening, I’m not bothered about pitting myself against anyone.
“I’ve sparred heavyweights and they haven’t put anything on me that I couldn’t give back. I’m always looking to take the centre of the ring, I can box and switch stances.
“I’ve been at the top levels, as an amateur, and I think that the pro style will suit me, so I’m confident that I can do well again and I’m really excited about my debut.
“I’ll go in there and box to win, but I also want a 100 per cent knockout ratio. If the chance of a stoppage presents itself, I’ll be throwing everything that I can to make it happen.”
Tickets for the Hangar bill are available, priced at £40 standard or £75 VIP ringside with buffet, directly from the boxers or by visiting myfighttickets.com.
