Regis Prograis vows to box rather than brawl to prolong his career – Ring News 24 | Boxing News

Former WBA junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis 27-1 (23) says he is going to focus more on boxing and less of brawling following his sixth-round stoppage victory over Tyrone McKenna 22-3-1 (6) at the Duty Free Tennis Stadium in Dubai on Saturday night.

McKenna was down in round two before being stopped on cuts at the 1:40 mark of the sixth.

“I felt great. A big up for Tyrone; he was tougher than I thought,” Prograis said to iFL TV. “Looking at him and how frail his body looked, ‘I’m going to blast him out in one round, two round.’ Man, he was tough.

“That was probably the best outcome because he was all cut up and stuff, and he just kept coming. So he was definitely tough competition.

“But he brought the war, that’s what he promised, but once I started boxing, that’s all I had to do. I didn’t have to go to war with him. When I was face-to-face, I told him, ‘Look, I’m going to hurt you.’

“It’s what I do. I go and I hurt people and I know I have power. I know he never felt nothing like that.

“With eight ounces on, most people can’t take my power, especially now that I’m starting to box, people aren’t going to take that. I just need to box when I box and people can’t touch me. I feel like I’m the best at 140 when I have to box, though.

“I got drawn into one fight, which you’re referring to against Josh Taylor, and it didn’t go the way I wanted to go. But when I box, most people can’t touch me.

“My thing is, I love to go to war. That’s just me mentally and why I’m a fighter. But now, when I box, it’s so easy, it’s so much easier, and at the same time, I can get people out of there, and it’s longevity on my career. I think definitely going forward; I need to box more.

With undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor 19-0 (13) expected to move up in weight, Prograis looks to be in line to face Jose Zepeda 35-2 (27) for the vacant WBC title.

Prograis was asked about the likelihood of a bout against Jack Catterall 26-1 (13) who lost a hotly disputed decision to Taylor earlier this month.

“I don’t think it can be my next fight because we’re fighting for the WBC. Me and Zepeda are supposed to fight for the WBC, so I don’t think that can be for my next fight,” said Prograis when asked if he wants to face Jack Catterall next.

“But after me and Zepeda, the winner will get Jack Catterall. I feel like Jack Catterall does deserve a chance at the belt because, of course, what happened with the decision with Josh Taylor.

“Hopefully, we can. Hopefully, me and Jack can make it happen one day.”
