John Fury Potentially On Undercard Of Fury v Whyte – Ring News 24 | Boxing News

The WBC heavyweight champion of the world, Tyson Fury, has stated that he wants his father, John Fury, to appear on the undercard of his world championship defence against Dillian Whyte. The contest will take place on April 13th at Wembley Stadium in London.

Fury said to Dev Sahni on the Unibet Lowdown about the potential appearance: “I’m trying to get John on the undercard to be honest.

“Frank (Warren) is working very hard behind the scenes, it’s not been announced but I’m just going to give you a little sneaky preview.

“Big John, trying to get him on the undercard. So yeah, don’t be surprised.”

For those that do not know, John was a former professional boxer himself. However, with a current record of 8-4-1 and now being at the age of 57 this writer is hoping that if this becomes a reality then it will be nothing more than an exhibition match. In these kinds of situations, the desire is often vocally expressed that a tragedy in boxing should be avoided. But more often than not, the type of tragedy that fans often have in mind do not occur. That does not mean, however, that a 57 year old, who had his last bout in 1995, should get back into the ring to seriously compete. The furthest that John had ever gotten as a professional boxer was when he got an opportunity to fight for the Central Area crown. He came up short on points and then was stopped by Henry Akinwande before calling it a day.

Personally, I do not think boxing has any business dealing with such circumstances. Then again, I have the same opinion about Youtube “stars” making money while trading leather. Even though those guys are often carefully matched, boxing is still all about fighting. And anything serious can happen!

I am hoping that an undercard to Fury v Whyte containing plenty of substance is being planned and ready to be announced soon. And if an exhibition bout or two is thrown in then that should not be too detrimental to the sport.
