By Allan Fox: Unbeaten middleweight contender Jaime Munguia (39-0, 31 KOs) and former IBF/WBA champion Daniel ‘Miracle Man’ Jacobs (37-4, 30s) are in talks for a catchweight clash in the 168-lb division on DAZN in the summer.
Dan Rafael is reporting the news of the Munguia vs. Jacobs talks. For it to happen, DAZN will need to give the green light to have this fight as a headliner.
It doesn’t make sense for Munguia to fight Jacobs now because he lost his last fight, and he’s looked timid, old, and past it.
Of course, as bad as Jacobs has looked recently, he’s world’s better than Munguia’s opposition since he moved up to the 160lb division five fights ago.
In Munguia’s recent match, he beat a guy named D’Mitrius Ballard by a third-round knockout on February 19th.
DAZN chose to stream the Munguia-Ballard fight for the main event, even though Ballard isn’t a top-tier contender and few boxing fans had ever heard of him.
Munguia’s opposition since moving up to 160:
- D’Mitrius Ballard
- Kamil Szeremeta
- Gabe Rosado
- Tureano Johnson
- Gary O’Sullivan
Jacobs used to be a good fighter many years ago, but he’s looking like a fossil lately in losses to John Ryder and Canelo Alvarez.
Considering that the 35-year-old Jacobs lost his last fight against John Ryder last February, and was arguably beaten in another poor showing against Gabe Rosado in 2020, I don’t know why DAZN would agree to this poor fight.
They should be letting Golden Boy know that they’d like to see Munguia fight a live body for a change because he’s been taking it easy since he moved up to the 160-lb division in 2020, fighting old guys and recently beat guys.
Munguia, 25, could have fought Demetrius Andrade for his WBO middleweight title but turned it down. Recently, Munguia turned down a WBC 160-lb title eliminator against Zhanibek Alimkhanuly.
Munguia wants a title shot against IBF 160lb champion Gennadiy Golovkin, but it’s not happening this year. That’s the guy that Munguia has frequently mentioned that he does want to fight.
“Representatives for Jamie Munguia and Daniel Jacobs have begun discussing a fight between them that would headline a DAZN card this summer,” said Dan Rafael to Fight Freaks Unite.
The sources said that Munguia co-promoter Golden Boy and Jacobs’ team of promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing and manager Keith Connolly are in talks for a fight that likely would take place slightly north of the 160-pound middleweight limit. Jacobs’ last three fights have been at super middleweight.
