Undefeated welterweight Giovani Santillan 29-0 (16) believes he is ready to take his career to the next level following his seventh round stoppage of Jeovannis Barraza 23-3 (15) at The Hanger in Costa Mesa, California on Saturday night.

The 30-year-old southpaw from San Diego was simply too powerful for his Colombian opponent, walking the 26-year-old down. His body work was particularly impressive as he threw regularly and with ferocity downstairs.

According to CompuBox, Santillan held a 193-37 connect advantage which included 50 landed body blows. Santillan was 152 of 350 (43%) in power punches. The bout was halted by referee Thomas Taylor at the 0:33 mark of the seventh frame.

“I am humbled by the support of my hometown, San Diego. Once again, they came out in force. They motivate me to do my best every time out there,” said Santillan, who is co-promoted by Top Rank and Thompson Boxing.

“I am going to keep working to earn a welterweight world title shot. I have a great team behind me, and when the time comes, I’ll be ready.

“This guy was tough, and my performance showed that I can compete with great fighters. I know I had to fight a smart disciplined fight and I think this bout showed my growth as a fighter. I’m ready to take on all big names at welterweight.”

The welterweight division hosts some of the biggest names in boxing including WBC and IBF champion Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr – who will take on WBA boss Yordenis Ugas this Saturday – and WBO kingpin Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford. Santillan is currently unrated by the four major sanctioning bodies.

“This was a great win for my career and I’m very grateful to all of those involved in making this happen,” said Santillan.

“I’m not one to call any one out, but I’m ready to take my career to the next level. I know I have great promoters and a great record and I know they will get me the best fights possible. I’m just hoping to get a big name in the ring soon.”

“We believe in Giovani so much and can’t wait to see him get a chance against anyone of the big names at 147 pounds,” said Alex Camponovo, Thompson Boxing’s general manager.

“We are very proud of his latest performance, in which he dominated the fight and got the stoppage. It is all systems go for Giovanni from this point forward.”
