WBA, WBO and IBF lightweight champion George ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos Jr 20-0 (10) believes American southpaw Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis 26-0 (24) will never travel down under to face him in his native Australia.
The 28-year-old Kambosos from Sydney wrested the three belts from Teofimo Lopez 16-1 (12) by split decision at New York’s famed Madison Square Garden last November is currently trying to lock in an opponent for his first world title defence at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on June 5.
Former three-weight world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko 16-2 (11) was expected to land the gig, but the Ukrainian southpaw has opted to remain in his homeland to defend his country from the month-long invasion by Russia.
Next in line is WBC titleholder Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney 27-0 (15) who is widely expected to secure the fight.
In a recent interview with FightHype, Kambosos spoke about Davis’ upcoming fight against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero 14-0 (12) at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on May 28.
“That’s not a big fight at all. The other guy, I’m not sure who he is but he’s not even a top 15 kind of guy,” Kambosos said. “Tank should get rid of him really early. He’s like a sacrificial lamb, I believe.
“Tank will destroy him and you’ll never hear about this kid again. Like I said, the guys that deserve the fight are obviously Lomachenko and Devin Haney.
“I’d love to fight Gervonta Davis, but he’s not going to come to Australia, so we’ll see where that goes one day. I may have to kick his arse in his hometown as well.
“Look, we all know he’s not coming to Australia and that’s a fact.
“I’m not going to sit here and try and make an excuse and say, ‘He can’t come here because of this reason’. He will not come to Australia full stop, and if he does, no problem.
“I love fighting in America. I’ve fought in America so many times. I’ve fought in the biggest arenas in the US. That’s a fight that will most likely take place in the US.
“But like I said it’s step by step, one fight at a time. I will take them all out. Let’s hope Devin Haney steps up and we get this fight done first.”
Kambosos recently sent a message to Lomachenko on Twitter when he posted: “Vasyl Lomachenko I respect your decision and I totally understand and I pray for you and your country.
“Please stay safe and once I wipe the floor with Devin, we will make this fight between two real champions. God bless.”
Kambosos’ American promoter Lou DiBella also expressed his support for Lomachenko, telling ESPN: “How can anyone question, the fight he’s going through right now is much bigger than any boxing match.
“We made a deal with him, the deal was literally done before the invasion, we wanted to give him any chance within reason with our allowable timetable.
“We have nothing but the utmost respect for his decision. Kambosos wanted to make sure once we made that deal that Lomachenko had ample time to decide.
“We said all along we would try to make the biggest fights and we did that today.”
Kambosos’ manager Peter Kahn added: “The WBO had made it very clear that it would strip George Kambosos Jr if he were to fight anybody other than the mandatory, Vasiliy Lomacheko.
“George did not want to relinquish any of the belts and therefore was going to fight the mandatory. In his mind he was always going to win and then would move on to fight Devin Haney.
“Yes, there were other factors at play regarding the deals that were presented but it also served another purpose, which is to keep the belts intact.”
