WBC lightweight titleholder Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney 27-0 (15) will be working with Top Rank in a deal that will see him face WBA, WBO and IBF lightweight champion George ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos Jr 20-0 (10) up to two times in Australia.
The first fight is expected to take place at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on the afternoon of June 5 (the evening of Saturday June 4 in the United States) with a rematch clause built in that would see the 27-year-old world champion from Sydney getting his chance at revenge on home soil should he lose.
The 23-year-old Haney from San Francisco but now boxing out of Las Vegas has previously worked with Matchroom Boxing and their broadcast affiliate DAZN.
But Matchroom Boxing boss Eddie Hearn wasn’t keen on Haney making two trips down under if he won the titles.
“We’ve been talking for all over the last weekend non-stop about the situation as well,” Hearn said on The DAZN Boxing Show.
“His plan is to go and get those belts and then come back and then hopefully we’ll be linking up again.
“But this is obviously the only fight out there for him, and [he] had to make [it]. There’s no other fight out there. I don’t know the full basis of the deal. The deal that we had planned was that if he [won], the rematch clause would take place in America.
“I saw that it said that the rematch clause would take place in Australia, which is something that we didn’t or wouldn’t agree to anyway, on behalf of Devin. And in our deal structure, the rematch was in America. I felt that would only be fair. So, you know, he’ll have these two fights in Australia if he wins the first one, which I believe he will. And then, no doubt, we’ll talk after that.
Hearn continued: “I want Devin to become undisputed. Loyalty is great and Devin is a very loyal kid. You know, we had conversations about this. But at the end of the day, you can’t miss an opportunity like this. And you know what, he hasn’t done is signed a three-, five-year deal with anyone else. This almost feels like a bit of a Canelo Alvarez play.
“In respect of ‘This is what I have to do at this time to become undisputed,’ he’s got a long career ahead of him. And I’m sure we’ll be working a lot together. But there’s no other fights out there in the division for Devin Haney, other than this fight. So it’s a shame that both of those will have to take place in Australia, if that’s the case. But he’s gotta do what he’s gotta do.”
Hearns’ comments come as former champion Teofimo Lopez 16-1 (12), who Kambosos beat for the titles, made salty comments about the new king at 135-pounds. Lopez, 24, was down in round one of that bout but returned the favour in round 10 before dropping a split decision by scores of 115-112 and 115-111 for Kambosos, 114-113 for Lopez.
“It’s a made fight for Haney,” Lopez said of the Kambosos-Haney match-up in an interview with FightHype.
“The whole shit was a scheme, bro. They had DAZN, I was on the DAZN platform. They gave it to Kambosos because they knew what I was going to do with it [the titles]. They knew what I was going to do. I was going to drop them.
“It’s a longer process for Devin to become quote and quote undisputed. It’s all a game. They paid that shit… Everything’s already made. Everything. I had to see that for myself. They already know who won before they even fucking announced it.
“Fuck both of ‘em.”
