By Charles Brun: Carl Froch says welterweight Conor Benn isn’t ready to face Adrien Broner or Danny Garcia for his next fight in London after his second-round TKO win over veteran Chris Van Heerden last Saturday night at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England.
Eddie Hearn is basking in the afterglow of Benn’s massacre of the 34-year-old Van Heerden (28-3-1, 12 KOs), talking of Conor (21-0, 14 KOs) becoming a world champion soon.
Hearn is obviously banking on the winner of the undisputed welterweight clash between champions Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford vacating all four of the titles, which would make a free-for-all dash by the contenders in the division.
Hearn could then choose one of the belts that has a beatable contender that Benn would have a 100% certainty of beating. That is to say, one of the soon-to-be-vacated 147-lb belts that don’t have Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis or Vergil Ortiz Jr. anywhere near the vicinity because those guys would be a nightmare for the greenhorn Benn.
“He’s NOT ready for those fighters,” said Carl Froch to Pro Boxing Fans when asked about his thoughts on Conor Benn fighting Adrien Broner or Danny Garcia next.
“He can’t be jumping up and stepping in with those top world-beaters. He swerved the European level. He needs to be fighting Ekow Essuman, people like him would give him rounds and give him a good fight. He maybe even could beat him,” said Froch.
I wouldn’t say that Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner are “world beaters” at this stage in their careers, as Froch refers to them, but they could beat Benn.
Danny would have an excellent chance of beating Benn, but Broner is probably too shot at this point in his career.
“Then you’ve got David Avanesyan, the European champion. He gives Conor Benn really [big problems],” said Froch. “That’s a great fight. I would love to see that. They say he’s not a big enough name. Okay, the risk-reward ratio might not be there for him, but those sorts of fights are going to get you there,” said Froch.
It’s useless for Froch to mention Avanesyan as a possible option for Benn’s next fight because Hearn has every excuse in the book for why Conor doesn’t have to fight him.
Hearn’s chief excuse for not letting Avanesyan anywhere near Benn is that he’s not as popular as guys like Broner, Mikey Garcia, or Danny.
“When you step up to the European level, you learn a lot. Conor Benn is missing out on these fights that will get him ready for that [world] level. Of course, he does, he needs those fights and he’s not getting them,” said Froch when asked if Benn needs the experience at the European level.
“He’s going to go on and become a world champion, now we’ve got to step up the opposition,” Eddie Hearn said to DAZN about Conor Benn after his win over Van Heerden.
“It’s going to be Mikey Garcia, Danny Garcia, Keith Thurman, Adrian Broner, David Avanesyan. We want a marquee fight.”
