Chris Eubank Jr Does Not Need Kell Brook…And Here Is Why – Ring News 24 | Boxing News

Ever since Kell Brook demolished Amir Khan last weekend in six rounds, talks have arisen for a possible clash between the Sheffield star and Chris Eubank Jr. Providing you count the IBO as a legitimate world title, Eubank could be looked at as a former two time world title challenger.

In 2018, George Groves defeated Eubank on points in the final of the World Boxing Super Series tournament for the WBA and IBO titles. Eubank would go on to win the IBO crown the following year by overcoming former gold medallist, James DeGale in what was the last fight for the Hammersmith man.

As for Brook, his career was thought to be in doubt when Terence Crawford knocked him out in four rounds for the WBO welterweight belt last year in the US. However, a mega domestic dust up was organised when Khan agreed to face Brook in what was a battle of pride. While Khan did not hit the canvas, he was busted up from the opening bell and all through the course of the fight until referee, Victor Loughlin, stepped in to save him from sustaining further damage.

Now it seems that a bout with Eubank Jr is a real possibility while the Sussex born boxer is also fighting to recover his career since his last loss.

But does Eubank really need Brook? And does Brook need Eubank?

I would say that Brook probably needs Eubank more than the other way around. While Chris is still a work in progress, Brook has been there and done that already. He has been a world champion and fought some of the best names that boxing had to offer during his time at world level. Kell looked good beating Amir. But let’s not get carried away. Amir looked a shadow of his former self. While his chin was never the greatest, he was evidently hit more times in the contest than he usually used to be. It really was a fight between two shopworn guys. And the Khan victory does not alter that opinion.

If Eubank lost, people would likely suggest that he was exposed and was never as good as his father promised that he was. If he wins, what are we supposed to think? Would such a win improve his rankings in any place? Unlikely.

The build up and hype might be entertaining and interesting. But ultimately it’s a bout that does not really contain that much substance in terms of what the future would hold afterwards for either man, although there may be a tad more in it for Brook if he came through.

I think Chris can do better than aiming his sights on somebody who has seen better days.
