Canelo Alvarez says he is in his prime, could box on for another seven years – Ring News 24 | Boxing News

Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez 57-1-2 (39) believes he is in his physical prime and says he could see himself boxing on for up to seven more years.

The 31-year-old WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF super middleweight champion will jump up in weight to challenge WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol 19-0 (11) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 7.

He is expected to drop back down in weight after the fight to face old rival Gennadiy Golovkin 42-1-1 (37) in a trilogy bout in September.

“It’s boxing, but nobody can beat me right now. I feel in my prime,” Alvarez said on the Boxing with Chris Mannix podcast.

“And no disrespect to other fighters. There’s some great fighters. But I feel in my prime. I feel strong. I feel in my best.”

Alvarez says he continues to improve in the gym and doesn’t simply train to prepare for a fight.

“We’re always trying to do something [new] in the gym,” Alvarez said. “We try not to do the same mistakes I do in my last fight. So we’re always working on something.”

“I don’t come to the gym like, ‘Oh, I have to train because I have a big fight’. This is part of my life. These kinds of fights, these kinds of challenges, make me motivate myself. These kinds of fights, big fights like this, make me feel motivated.

“Maybe [I have] more [motivation than 10 years ago]. Even more… I want to still be on this level to be the best fighter, so maybe I’m more motivated right now.”

After turning pro 17 years ago and winning world titles from 154 to 175 pounds, Alvarez says he has no plans to hang up the gloves any time soon.

“I hope [I continue to stay in boxing for] a long time, because I’m gonna miss boxing when I’m retired. Right now, [I have] six years more, seven, five, I don’t know,” Canelo told TMZ.

“I love boxing. I love a challenge. I love that adrenaline. I need to accomplish everything to be in the books of history of boxing. That’s why I’m here and I love what I do.

“When you see the best fighter go up and down a weight class and beat all the champions? I think nobody, and I try to do my best. For boxing, for me, for my legacy.

“[Dmitry’s] a really good boxer. He’s a solid champion at 175. It’s a dangerous fight. I like it, I love that kind of challenge. I really like it. But, I believe in my abilities and I’m strong too. So I’m confident in that, but it’s gonna be a really good fight.

“I like the idea to be undisputed at 175. That’s what I like, but you never know.”
