Oscar De La Hoya believes he knows who will win the upcoming undisputed welterweight title fight between Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr 28-0 (22) and Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford 39-0 (30).
Spence will put up his WBC, WBA and IBF belts against Crawford’s WBO strap at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 29.
De La Hoya to time out from his social media feud with his own boxer Ryan Garcia – who has accused him of abandoning him following his knockout loss to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis in April – to break down this intriguing welterweight showdown.
“I think that, still, Crawford has the abilities, the boxing skill, the boxing IQ,” the Golden Boy Promotions boss told FightHubTV. “You can see it. You don’t have to be a genius to know who is the better boxer.
“Spence, don’t get me wrong. He’s a great fighter. We built him. Golden Boy built him. So Spence has a tremendous shot at knocking him out. He has tremendous power, tremendous IQ, but I just think Crawford has better leg movement. He knows how to slip and side, move in and out, and bounce on his toes and throw punches in bunches.”
The promoter drew parallels between the recent undisputed lightweight title clash between champion Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney 30-0 (15) and challenger Vasiliy Lomachenko 17-3 (11). In that fight Haney threw single or double shots, targeting the body in particular, while Lomachenko would explode with multi-punch combinations. Haney won the bout by scores of 115-113, 116-112 and 115-113, but many fans and pundits felt that Lomachenko deserved the nod.
De La Hoya sees Spence playing the role of Haney to Crawford’s Lomachenko.
“You can’t win a fight with throwing just one or two punches,” he said. “If your opponent is Crawford and he throws four, five, six punches, then he’s gonna take the rounds and take the fight, just like what happened with Lomachenko and Haney. Lomachenko was throwing punches in bunches and landing almost everything. It was incredible.
“I strongly feel that Crawford and Spence, both great fighters, in my humble opinion – what do I know about boxing – is that Crawford has the better ability. He has the better arsenal inside the ring.”
