WBO welterweight champion Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford 38-0 (29) believes there is nothing stopping him from fighting WBC, WBA and IBF boss Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr 28-0 (22) in a four-belt unification bout between the two southpaw.
The 32-year-old Spence is coming off an impressive 10th round stoppage of Yordenis Ugas to add the WBA belt to his collection on April 16.
Crawford, 34, was last in action in November when stopped former world champion Shawn Porter in the 10th frame.
“There’s nothing standing in the way from us fighting,” Crawford told ESPN. “There’s no promotion company that’s blocking it, there’s no wrong side of the street, there’s no nothing.”
Crawford’s trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre is bullish about his charge’s chance against the unified champ.
“Man, Bud gon’ dominate him,” McIntyre told FightHype. “Bud gon’ dominate him, just like I said in my tweet. Bud gon beat the shit out of him. Mark my words, that’s what I said.
“The reason why I say this is because I’ve been watching Spence a long time. To me, he’s still doing the same thing.
“He may have gotten stronger, he may have improved on some of the things that he’s doing in camp, but as a trainer, he’s still doing the same thing. If he ain’t changed then, he ain’t gonna change by the time he get in there with Terence. That’s why I say what I say.”
Crawford is a promotional free agent after cutting ties with Top Rank when their deal ran out. Spence is promoted by Premier Boxing Champions.
In theory, the fight should be simple enough to make.
“It should happen,” McIntyre said. “It’s what the public wants. It’s what Terence wants. I’m sure Errol want the same thing. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed and hope and see.”
Crawford won his first world title at lightweight when he defeated Ricky Burns in Scotland to claim the WBO title way back in 2014. He made two defences of the belt against Yuriorkis Gamboa and Raymundo Beltran before moving up in weight to collect the vacant WBO 140-pound title against Thomas Dulorme.
Crawford would go on to unify all four major belts at junior welterweight before lifting the WBO welterweight title from Jeff Horn in 2018. He has defended the strap five times since but has struggled to find a significant opponent at the weight.
That would change if he can secure a fight against Spence. And if successful, don’t expect him to rest on his laurels.
“Let’s see who the best welterweight in the world is. I don’t want any tuneup fights,” Crawford said.
“I don’t want anything. I want to go straight into it. After I beat Spence, I’m moving up and I’m fucking up [WBC, WBA and IBF junior middleweight champion Jermell] Charlo.
“Now everybody’s saying that Errol’s back and he’s 100% ready. So now is the perfect time for me and him to fight. He called me out, so it ain’t no backing up.”
