Super flyweight contender Andrew ‘The Monster’ Moloney 23-2 (15) is eying off a big fight on the undercard of the undisputed lightweight championship fight between George ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos Jr 20-0 (10) and Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney 27-0 (17) at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia on June 5.
The 31-year-old Australian has highlighted WBC champion Juan Francisco Estrada 42-3 (28) of Mexico, WBO boss Kazuto Ioka 28-2 (15) of Japan and recently crown IBF kingpin Fernando Martinez 14-0 (8) as names on his hit list.
“Fighters like Estrada are dream fights,” Moloney said. “I wouldn’t ever turn those down. Ioka is a dream fight for any boxing purist. He’s an amazing fighter and a living legend. I would also like to fight newly crowned IBF champion Fernando Martinez.
“With Australian boxing buzzing now and big events coming to Australia, that’s a dream fight I would want on a card featuring the likes of George Kambosos Jr and Devin Haney.
“If I have to go to Japan to challenge for the WBO belt, it would be my honor. Ioka is a great, but I believe I’m still improving and if the fight came around. Doesn’t matter if it’s the WBO, WBA, IBF or WBC and if I have to go to Argentina, Mexico, America, England or Jupiter, I will travel anywhere to become world champion again. Andrew Moloney is always ready and always comes to fight, I will be world champion again soon!”
Moloney was back in action earlier this month when he stopped journeyman Gilberto Mendoza in the final frame of an eighth-round of a stay busy fight at The Hanger in Costa Mesa, California on April 9.
“I was delighted to get back in the ring on ESPN again, so thank you to Top Rank and my team headed up by Tony Tolj for getting me another opportunity on the world’s biggest sports broadcaster,” Moloney said.
“I was happy with my performance. I shook off some rust and showed that I was back to my best.
“This was what I really needed and I’m glad I got to put on a performance that justified why I am a former world champion. There is a lot left in the tank for me at super flyweight and I believe I’m improving every day and learning and I showed that to everyone watching on ESPN.”
Moloney contested a trilogy of bouts against Joshua ‘El Profesor’ Franco in 2020 and 2021. Although he lost the first and third fights by decision, he was extraordinarily unlucky to have to settle for a no decision in their second bout when it was ruled that the swelling to Franco’s eye was caused by a headclash rather than a punch that the replay clearly showed. The fight was stopped at the end of the second round.
The world-rated Moloney believes he still has a lot to give in the stacked super flyweight division.
“The division is arguably the most underrated division in boxing today,” Moloney said. “There are so many quality fighters operating at super flyweight, it’s exciting to be considered part of the elite of the division.”
