Tyson Fury’s co-promoter Frank Warren believes the WBC heavyweight champion does not need to box again to cement his legacy.
The 33-year-old Fury 32-0-1 (23) knocked out mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte 28-3 (19) with a picture-perfect right uppercut in front of a crowd of 94,000 people at Wemlbey Stadium in London last Saturday night.
In the lead up to the bout Fury flagged his plans to retire after the fight and reaffirmed his commitment to hanging up the gloves in the aftermath.
If Fury is true to his word, that would leave big money fights against domestic rival Anthony Joshua 24-2 (22) and WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk 19-0 (13) on the table.
Warren says Fury doesn’t have to face those names to prove his worth.
“He’s the better fighter out of all of them,” Warren said after the fight. “To prove my point, so that there’s no doubt, I would like to see him [fight again], but the fact of the matter is he has nothing to prove to anybody.”
Fury won the WBA, WBO and IBF titles in November 2015 when he travelled to Germany to dethrone long-reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko on points.
More recently, he boxed a trilogy of fights with Deontay Wilder, losing the first bout by controversial split draw before knocking out the American power-puncher twice in their subsequent rematches.
“Tyson Fury is the heavyweight of the generation,” Warren continued. “He beat Klitschko who was the best of his generation. Done a job on him and boxed his head off.
“Then he went to the States, again, in the other guys’ backyard and done a job on Deontay Wilder. Absolutely won the three fights really, got robbed. Deontay Wilder was undefeated for, what was it, six years? Tyson’s got nothing to prove to anybody.
“Looks, if it’s the end, it’s the end. That’s his choice. He’s the guy getting in the ring. If that’s how he feels, that’s how he feels. I support him wholeheartedly. It’s up to him what he wants to do.
“He is at the peak of his powers. There’s no doubt about that. And I’m quite sure he can go on. But if your head’s not in it – what do I mean by that. If your heart and head isn’t in it, then it’s dangerous. And he shouldn’t be doing it. It has to be his choice. Who knows what’s going to happen. If that’s how he feels, that’s how he feels. We all support him.”
Fury reaffirmed his retirement this week while saying he would walk through former undisputed cruiserweight champion Usyk, who boxed as a middleweight in the amateurs.
“It’s never gonna happen because I’m retired,” Fury told talkSPORT on Thursday. “But let’s just say I’d punch him round the ring, because he’s a middleweight, blown up. I’ve already been the undisputed champion, I’ve won every single belt there is to win. I’ve got nothing more to do – I am out, fully retired. Done.”
