Promoter Eddie Hearn has indicated he wants to sign lightweight Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis 26-0 (24) when his contract expires with Mayweather Promotions.

The 27-year-old southpaw from Baltimore, Maryland has indicated his promotional deal with Mayweather is coming to an end after his defence of his secondary WBC ‘regular’ lightweight title against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero 14-0 (12) at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on May 28.

Three weeks ago Davis posted to Twitter: “My contract is up, that’s why they want me to fight this clown so bad.”

In a recent interview with FightHype, Mayweather appeared to concede the relationship was coming to an end.

“Nothing lasts forever,” he said. “I will always love Tank. I like him. Love him, look at him as a son. He has to do what’s best for him. I feel like I’ve done a great job thus far, building him and putting him in good fights, great fights.”

Davis has been built into a draw in the US with his last three fights taking place on Showtime pay-per-view. As a free agent, there will be plenty of promoters circling when his signature is up for grabs, including Hearn.

“I’ve seen Gervonta Davis post stuff about other promotional companies approaching him,” the Matchroom Boxing boss told The DAZN Boxing Show. “I’m not aware of his contractual position so I won’t be directly approaching him. But I can approach him on here and tell him that once his contract does expire, of course we would be willing to make him a fantastic offer.

“I know Gervonta. He’s a great young fighter. He’s one of the biggest stars in the game. Time for him to get what he needs. Time for him to get what he wants if he’s not happy.”

The lightweight division is one of the deepest in boxing. Hearn said he would be keen to match him with Golden Boy Promotions’ Ryan Garcia 22-0 (18) on his broadcast partner DAZN. Another option could be Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney 27-0 (15) who is set to face unified lightweight champion George ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos Jr 20-0 (10) at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia on June 5.

Haney is contractually obliged to rematch Kambosos should he win. Although he has signed a promotional pact with Top Rank, there still seems to be a solid relationship with Hearn.

“Again we don’t want to get involved in [Davis’ contractual status],” Hearn said. “There’s a great fight with Ryan Garcia on DAZN to be made with Golden Boy. There’s a great fight with Devin Haney after those two fights.

“We would certainly be looking to pursue Gervonta Davis extremely aggressively if he was in a position in which he was no longer under contract.”

Davis has previously held the IBF and WBA super featherweight titles as well as secondary titles at lightweight and junior welterweight.
