By Jack Tiernan: Lightweight star Ryan Garcia weighed in at 138.8 lbs on Friday at the weigh-in for his 139-lb catchweight fight against Emmanuel Tagoe on Saturday night. Tagoe (32-1, 15 KOs) weighed in at 138.2 lbs and looked in great shape.

The Garcia-Tagoe fight will be headlining on DAZN from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. In the co-feature bout, former two-time world title challenger Gabe Rosado will be taking on Shane Mosley Jr. in a fight that should be an exciting one from start to finish.
During the face-off, the 5’10” Ryan towered over the 5’8″ Tagoe, looking much taller than him. It’s hard to believe that only two inches separate Ryan and Tagoe from one another because it appeared to be more like three, possibly four.
Tagoe will need to be careful in this fight to keep from getting caught by Ryan’s lethal left hook, which could be the most potent punch in the division. If Ryan lands that shot on anybody in the weight class, they will go to sleep. Tagoe is no exception.
The 33-year-old Tagoe hasn’t lost a fight in 18 years since 2004, and he comes in highly recommended for this fight. To be sure, Tagoe will give the 23-year-old Ryan all he can handle on Saturday night.
Oscar De La Hoya believes this is an essential fight for Ryan Garcia because he’s got to win decisively to show the boxing world he’s back.
Ryan has been out of the ring since January 2021, dealing with injuries and a brief mental health episode that sapped his energy. With all that behind him, Ryan is ready to make a statement on Saturday night against Tagoe.

Gabe Rosado (26-14-1, 15 KOs) will be looking to rebound from a defeat in his last fight against Jaime Munguia when he steps in the ring on Saturday night against the tall 6’1″ Shane Mosley Jr. (17-4, 10 KOs) in a 10 round fight. The fight will take place in the middleweight division.
Mosley lost his last fight against Jason Quigley Jr. by a 10 round majority decision last May in Las Vegas.
“I said to Bernard Hopkins, ‘What do you think about the ring rust [for Ryan Garcia?’ ‘One round, two rounds, there’s no ring rust whatsoever.’ He’s just going to go in there and take that ring rust out in the first round, and then off to the races,” said Oscar De La Hoya to Fino Boxing in talking about Ryan Garcia’s 15-month layoff.
“I think [trainer] Joe Goosen brings a lot to the table. Knockouts are always what people want to see,” said De La Hoya on Ryan wanting to score a stoppage on Saturday night against Tagoe. “A 15-month layoff, if he gets a knockout, there’s no doubt that he’s back.
“I would be pleasantly surprised if he gets a knockout on Saturday night; it would be amazing. The difference here with Ryan’s career and people don’t really understand this. All those names you mentioned [Devin Haney, George Kambosos, Gervonta Davis, and Vasyl Lomachenko] need Ryan.
“If you want to make a mega-fight, you need Ryan. He’s in a very unique position the way that I was, the way that Floyd [Mayweather] was, the way that Manny Pacquiao was. Ryan hasn’t won a world title yet, and that’s what makes him special.
“Every world champion needs him. So whenever we make the fights happen, it’s going to be huge; they’re going to be big. Make sure that people know what’s going on here. Everybody needs Ryan,” said De La Hoya about the popularity of King Ry.
