Former IBF featherweight champion Billy ‘The Kid’ Dib 48-6 (27) has said he doesn’t believe there was any malicious intent from Jacob ‘The Flamingo’ Ng 15-1 (11) when he flipped him onto the canvas and injured him in their scheduled 10-round lightweight bout at The Star Gold Coast in Broadbeach, Australia on Saturday night.

The bout was a competitive one with local favourite Ng leading 48-47, 48-47 and 50-45 leading into the sixth.

Early in that round Dib initiated a clinch, coming over the right shoulder of the six-foot tall Ng who was crouching at the time. Ng, 27, stood up straight and gave a little flick. It was enough to send Dib to the canvas.

Clearly injured, the bout was called off and Dib was announced the winner by disqualification.

Dib issued a statement from his hospital bed where he is recovering from three fractured ribs.

“First and foremost I want to thank the Almighty that both Jacob and I are safe,” Sydneysider Dib said. “A big thank you to my team beautiful supporters family and sponsors for your love and support last night.

“I’m currently in hospital with a dislodged rib that caused 3 separate fractures due to being flipped on the canvas. I’m doing ok and will be back on my feet real soon.

“Jacob is a talented young fighter with great potential and I don’t believe there was malicious in his actions last night.

“It was a great fight that I believe was only going to get better towards the later rounds as per our game plan.

“A huge thank you to the amazing promotional team Ace Boxing Group for giving me an opportunity to fight one of your top prospects and putting on such a great promotion.”

The fight was shaping up to be a good one down the stretch with veteran Dib, 36, already showing his veteran savvy to take Ng off his game.

But the popular Queenslander looked to be doing just enough to control the bout despite both boxers seeming to foul without referee Steve Marshall stepping in.

In light of those circumstances, it’s not entirely surprising that the bout ended in a DQ. A rematch would be a natural.

“I am in hospital. I dislodged my right rib cage and fractured three of my ribs,” Dib said to Fightnews immediately after the fight.

“They are hairline fractures. I felt like I was coming over the top of Jacob Ng in our fight. He was getting frustrated with the fact he couldn’t land his shots. He didn’t have any power. I was the one in charge up to when he fouled me.

“I will have to wait to see how this heals but I am in a lot of pain at the moment. Hopefully, when it heals I will be able to evaluate everything.”
