By Jack Tiernan: Trainer Joe Goosen says lightweight star Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) will remain undefeated his entire career.
Goosen has a diamond in the rough in taking over with the still unfinished Ryan Garcia, and this is his chance to complete the process of turning him into a star at 135.
Goosen is taking over for Eddy Reynoso as the coach for #2 WBC ranked lightweight contender Garcia, and he sees him as having the talent to beat many of the top 135-lb contenders right away.
Reynoso may regret not having the time to work with Ryan, as he’s going to need a replacement for his aging star Canelo Alvarez.
Ryan, 23, revealed last week that he had to switch out Reynoso because of time issues. With Reynoso having his hands full with
The 23-year-old ‘King Ry’ needs a trainer that is available to get him ready for his April 9th fight against Emmanuel Tagoe (32-1, 15 KOs) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Goosen says Ryan ready to beat the best
“I think his next fight [againt Tagoe] will tell a big story,” said Joe Goosen to Fighthype when asked when Ryan Garcia will be ready to challenge for a world title.
“I think there are plenty of guys at the very top that he could beat today,” Goosen said of Ryan being ready to beat the best at 135 with him walking in the door as his new trainer.
“With that being said, that usually falls upon his management team and his promoter, and I kind of leave that to them.
“If they throw a name out there and throw an opponent, then I’ll say, ‘Okay, if that’s who you guys have picked and Ryan is okay with it, then we’ll address that and we’ll strategize and game plan against that particular opponent.
“Right now, it’s foolish to be looking past the guy that we’re going to be fighting,” said Goosen about him focusing on Ryan Garcia’s next opponent Emmanuel Tagoe on April 9th.
“I let the other guys in the management team and promotion team kind of direct that pathway. I do believe we’ll be ready for anybody,” said Goosen.
Ryan could test Goosen’s opinion of him being good enough to beat the best this year, as it’s believed by some that he’ll be challenging George Kambosos Jr. for his four lightweight titles, provided he beats Emmanuel Tagoe in their headliner on DAZN on April 9th.
Defeating Kambosos Jr. would be a tremendous win for Ryan, putting him in the position to make a massive amount of money defending against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, Devin Haney, or Vasily Lomachenko.
Given that Ryan isn’t the mandatory for any of Kambnosos’ four belts, it’s likely there will be a rematch clause in the contract.
Ryan and Kambosos would be fighting for a second time, and that would be another big-money clash for King Ry.
Ryan Garcia will never taste defeat
“I’ve said it before. Ryan Garcia will remain undefeated his entire career. That’s how good I think he is,” said Goosen. “I don’t say that about many fighters. I do about him. He’s exceptional, highly exceptional.
“I’m champing at the bit right now, I’m very excited. Ryan and I have had some contact, and we’re both ready to go to work. That’s awesome. I’m packed up and hitting the road tomorrow morning. Let’s start Monday,” said Goosen.
It’s hard to imagine how popular Ryan will be if he’s able to stay undefeated his entire professional career. Not even the great Oscar De La Hoya was able to stay unbeaten his entire career.
Although Floyd Mayweather Jr. stayed unbeaten his entire career, he didn’t become a star until he was in his late 20s. Ryan is on the cusp of becoming a star 23, which is hard to believe.
